Honor's Haven Initiatives for Greener Impact

Honor’s Haven’s environmental stewardship and sustainability policy is designed to strategically reduce our annual carbon footprint through holistic initiatives and practices. We achieve this goal while saving resources and maintaining the highest standards for cleanliness, guest comfort and customer service.

We strive to be an inspiring environmental organization by recycling, composting, purchasing green products, using energy-efficient lighting and appliances, water conservation and utilizing green cleaning and hospitality products when consistent with guest comfort and preferences. The team is also working with Earth Citizens Organization (ECO) to extend our impact for greener hospitality and to promote sustainable community culture through our programs and guest experiences.

Our Ten Sustainability Goals by the Spring of 2023

  • 100% organic land management practices for landscaping, turf grass and field crops with regard to fertilizers, pests and weeds.

  • 100% of all water used onsite for irrigation and landscaping sourced from rainwater collection and existing onsite wells.

  • 100% access to fresh, clean, purified drinking water throughout the facilities by expanding existing purified drinking water locations, increasing use of reusable drinking water containers and reducing the need for disposable or bottled water.

  • 90% or more of landfill waste diversion through extensive recycling programs, kitchen food scrap and paper towel composting and diligent separation of any hazardous materials, electronic waste and ongoing construction waste, continued collection and recycling of kitchen grease with exploration of onsite biodiesel utilization and production for use in tractors and/or diesel equipment.

  • 50% onsite renewable energy generation with photovoltaic solar panels placed on hotel roofs, carport shade structures and possibly ground mount solar, if needed.

  • 50% or more overall reduction in carbon emissions by transitioning to a biofuel boiler (from heating oil) with expanded energy efficiency upgrades, recycling, composting, renewable energy, local food, carbon sequestration in soil and more.

  • 50% onsite production, processing and serving of high quality organic medicinal and herbal teas, such as mint, chamomile and nettle.

  • 25% onsite production in greenhouses and field crops of high-quality organic foods (vegetables, squashes, greens, starches) for utilization in the snack shop and main kitchen menu with 25% of all outside sourced food certified organic.

  • 25 acres of restored native riparian habitat in areas adjacent to creeks and streams to reduce erosion and flooding and improve local water quality while also enhancing native flora and fauna species’ diversity and habitat.

  • Build a healthy, thriving, responsible Earth Citizenship organization and company culture through increased employee sustainability participation, engagement, training, collaboration and ongoing support of personal and planetary well-being.

Current Accomplishments and On-going Practices

  • We have also achieved the prestigious Green Concierge Certification, Tier One - Bronze!

In July of 2015, the retreat became certified through the HospitalityGreen (HG) LLC Green Concierge Eco-Business Certification ™ program.

As an organization, we have a strong passion for sustainability and green business practices. We’ve demonstrated our dedication to the Green Concierge program through staff trainings, the implementation of recommendations and adherence to the Tier One Bronze set of standards of the program.

Furthermore, we will continue to improve and track our environmentally sustainable practices with the assistance of HG. It is our intention to qualify as a Tier Two – Silver facility under the GC Eco-Business Certification program by the Spring of 2021.

    • Green Seal certified non-toxic cleaning products used in all guest rooms

    • Green Seal and Eco-Logo certified products in our laundry systems and throughout the property

    • We purchase 30% (100% suggested) recycled content office copy paper and 50% (100% suggested) recycled content bathroom tissue paper.

    • We purchase in bulk to minimize packaging and truck transportation.

    • We installed low-flow aerators in all guest room faucets and shower heads and we offer guests the option of participating in our towel and linen re-use program.

    • A formal water conservation policy is in development. Front loading low-water use washing machines are in place for all laundry.

    • Our facility is tracking all waste, recycling and donations throughout the year and is in the pilot stages of implementing a food scrap and paper towel composting program. We recycle all cardboard, waste cooking oil, office paper, bottles/cans and plastic food containers. For the same purpose, recycling bins have been placed in every guest room and throughout our facilities.

    • We dispose of hazardous waste according to state regulations.

    • Our staff members participated in a three-hour green training and will continue to be actively involved in trainings throughout the coming year.

    • We established a Green Team in April of 2015 for the planning and execution of strategic actions for Greener Hospitality.

    • Furniture, linens and soft goods are donated to local charities.

    • We give a second life to slightly used soaps and plastic amenity bottles by participating in Clean the World’s Global Soap Project. Since 2009, Clean the World has distributed more than 22 million bars of soap in 96 countries.

    • We encourage email confirmations and e-brochures to reduce paper use.
